Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. -- Junior right side hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.) led all players with 13 kills and hit .423 for the match to lead the Wheaton College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-11) victory over host Roger Williams University this this afternoon at the Roger Williams Invitational at the Campus Rec Center in Bristol, R.I. The Lyons won both of their matches at the invite and improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 0-2.
The 3-0 start is the best record to open the season for Wheaton since it began the 2017 campaign with a 5-0 mark.
Madrzyk committed just two attack errors for the Lyons and added two digs and a block assist to her effort for the match. Wheaton hit extremely well for the contest, owning a .262 mark, including a torrid .550 clip for the third set.
Senior outside hitter Adara Hamilton (Mercer Island, Wash.) averaged five digs a set to give her 15 for the contest in addition to seven kills and an ace for the Lyons . Sophomore outside hitter Julianna Flack (Pinellas Park, Fla.) chipped in with six kills and hit a robust .417 for the match, while sophomore setter Zoë Franz (Noblesville, Ind.) made the most of her time on the court with 19 assists, two aces, three digs and a kill for Wheaton. Junior defensive specialist Ariana Rajaee (Marlborough, Conn.) fired a match-high three aces and added 12 digs for the Lyons.
Senior outside hitter Katherine Pickard (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led the home team with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs to go with a pair of block assists, while senior setter Kate Porter (Killingworth, Conn.) led all setters with 13 assists and 11 digs. Senior libero Jamie Gaffga (Mattituck, N.Y.) was the catalyst on defense for the Hawks, getting down for 18 digs.
Madrzyk set the tone for Wheaton from the start wtih a pair of kills to open the first set. From there, the Lyons kept the Hawks at arm's length most of the way. Wheaton built its lead to four (11-7) midway through the set, forcing a Hawk timeout. Wheaton eventually took a commanding 18-11 lead before coming away with a 25-20 opening set win.
RWU came out of the gate with three straight points before taking a 5-1 lead in the second frame. The Hawk lead didn't last, as the Lyons used a 5-0 run to turn an 8-11 deficit into a 13-11 advantage. The turning point came late in the set when Wheaton took advantage of another 5-0 run to take a 20-13 lead. Roger Williams managed to pull within two (20-22) on a pair of Allie Welch (Marlborough, Conn.) kills, but Wheaton scored three of the final four points for a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the Hawks fell behind early with the Lyons scoring the first five points of the set. Compounding RWU's issues were a slew of rotation errors that gave away free points to Wheaton. The Lyons built a 14-4 advantage and never looked back after taking the final set 25-11.
Wheaton returns to action on Friday, September 10 when it hosts Rhode Island College at 6:00 p.m. as part of the two-day, five-team Wheaton Invitational played at Emerson Gymnasium in Norton, Mass. Roger Williams is in action again on September 7 when it travels to Medford, Mass. to take on Tufts University at 7:00 p.m.
