Box Score WENHAM, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Charlie Stringer (Medford, Ore.) factored into both goals with a score and an assist to give the Wheaton College men's soccer team a 2-0 victory over host Gordon College this evening at the Brigham Complex in Wenham, Mass. The Lyons improve to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Fighting Scots fall to 0-2-0.
Stringer gave Wheaton all the offense it would need with a goal coming less than four minutes into the match at the 3:26 mark. Stringer was instrumental in the Lyons second tally as well, finding sophomore forward and fellow Oregonian Luke Strange (Portland, Ore.) for his second marker of the year to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead with just over 30 minutes to play in the contest. Strange becomes the first Lyon to net a goal in each of the first two games of the season since Adam Waks (2015-18) did the same to start the 2018 campaign and the first Wheaton player to score a goal in each of his first two official collegiate matches since Conor Finn (2009-11) found the back of the net in each of his first two career appearances in 2009.
The Lyons defense took care of the rest, keeping Gordon off the board, despite the home team holding an 8-7 shot edge.
Senior keeper Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) recorded his eighth career shutout with two saves for Wheaton.
Sophomore defender Casey Torres (Atlanta, Ga.) paced the Fighting Scots offensive effort with a pair of shots, while senior goalie Brody Veleber (Coatsville, Pa.) turned away two shots for the home team.
The Lyons return to action on Sunday, September 5 when they travel to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College at 1:00 p.m., while Gordon plays again when it hosts Fitchburg State University on September 11 at 7:00 p.m.
