Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Senior outside hitter Adara Hamilton (Mercer Island, Wash.) put down 15 kills and hit .407, while junior right side hitter Emily Hickey (Kennebunk, Maine) boasted a .429 hitting mark to lead the Wheaton College women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 25-27, 25-17) victory over visiting Bridgewater State University this evening at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improve to 1-0, while the Bears fall to 0-1 in the season opener for both teams.
Wheaton was never threatened in each of its set wins and came back to knot Bridgewater in the third frame, 25-25, before the Bears pulled out its only set of the night. The home team posted a robust .348 hitting mark for the match.
Hamilton contributed on the defenisive side of the net as well with six digs and fired an ace for the Lyons, while Hickey spiked for nine kills. Junior right side hitter Bailey Madrzyk (Barrington, Ill.) enjoyed an error-free outing, putting away six kills in seven attempts for a blistering .857 hitting percentage, while sophomore outside hitter Annah Shaheen (Portsmouth, N.H.) put down seven kills on a .400 hitting percentage to go with a block solo for Wheaton. Sophomore setter Zoë Franz (Noblesville, Ind.) (22) and junior Hannah George (Duxbury, Mass.) (17) combined or 39 assists from the setter position for the Lyons. Junior defensive specialist Sophie Wilhelm (Saunderstown, R.I.) picked up nine digs to lead Wheaton.
Sophomore outside hitter Abigail Reardon (Fairhaven, Mass.) led Bridgewater State with eight kills and added three digs, while senior middle hitter Sydney Rice (Medway, Mass.) put down six kills on nine attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Junior defensive specialist Acushnet, Mass.) came up with nine digs to pace the Bears defense.
The Lyons return to action when they take on Salve Regina University and host Roger Williams Univeristy in tri-match action beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 4 in Bristol, R.I.
