Wheaton Walks Off Against Oswego State, Stays Undefeated in NCAA Regional

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. -- May 28, 2021 -- The third-seeded Wheaton College Lyons used a late-inning comeback to hand the second-seeded Oswego State baseball team their first loss of the NCAA Hartford Regional Championship by a score of 6-5.  The Lyons are the only team remaining without a loss and will await the winner of Southern Maine and Oswego State game played at 11:00am on Saturday, May 29th. The New England Men's and Women's Conference (NEWMAC) champions improve to a 18-4 record.

Oswego struck first in the top of the fourth when senior Ryan Weiss hit a two-RBI single to plate shortstop Paul Tammaro and third baseman Kyle Lauria. The Lakers added another two in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single from Dylan Frawley and an RBI-triple from centerfielder Brendon Frank.

Wheaton got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a walk by Brody Ashley (Strafford, N.H.), stolen base and RBI single by George Mulcahey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) A leadoff triple by Myles Felton was converted when Frawley singled via bunt to push the lead to 5-1 in the top of the seventh.

The Lyons cut into the Laker lead in the eighth when they loaded the bases with a pair of walks by Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) and Ashley, and a single by Mulcahey with no outs. A sacrifice fly by junior Jacob Studley (Barrington, R.I.) and a two-RBI double by Mark D'Augelli (Redding, Conn.) cut the Laker lead back to 5-4 after eight.

After a 1-2-3 ninth for Oswego, Wheaton used a walk by pinch hitter Andrew Manni (Middleton, Mass), an AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) infield single and walk by Ashley to load the bases with one out. A two-RBI single by Mulcahey through the right side completed the comeback for the third-seeded Lyons.

Senior reliever Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) improves his record to 5-0 on the season with the perfect ninth inning.

Wheaton will wait to take on the winner of Oswego and one-seeded, Southern Maine for a 6:00pm start.  The Huskies fell 5-4 to fourth-seeded Salve Regina earlier in the day.
