Softball splits with Coast Guard in NEWMAC battle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

New London, Conn. – April 10, 2021 – In a doubleheader against Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon, the visiting Lyons split with the Bears. In game one Wheaton held Coast Guard scoreless in a 2-0 victory but the home team responded in the second game, beating the Lyons 9-1. Wheaton moves to 3-3 in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play on the season.

In the first game, Sarah Pritchard (Malta, N.Y.) pitched a gem, going the full seven innings without allowing a single run. Pritchard only gave up four hits and strikeout five on the afternoon.

It was a scoreless game until the sixth inning, when junior Katelyn Barton (Andover, N.H.) homered to center to give Wheaton the lead. Then, the Lyons tacked on another run in the top half of the seventh when Allicyn Cole (Douglas, Mass.) reach on a throwing error that ended up scoring Allison Weston (West Islip, N.Y.). The two-run lead was all Pritchard needed to hang on in the bottom of the seventh, as she tossed a 1-2-3 inning to secure the win.

Barton went 1 for 4 with the big homerun, while both Weston and Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) recorded two hits in the game.

In game two, Coast Guard got the bats going to the tune of nine runs on 13 hits. Starter Emma Candelaria (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) went one inning, allowing five earned runs on five hits. Sofia Knopf (Norton, Mass.) took over in the second and allowed two more runs before giving way to Sarah Pritchard who stopped the bleeding for 1.1 innings. Rahne Turley (Sandwich, Mass.) threw one strong inning to close the day for Wheaton before the game was ended in the fifth.

The Bears scored two in the bottom of the first inning, but Wheaton and Julia McLintock (Swansea, Mass.) responded back in the second with a single to left that scored Madyson Bendanillo (Mansfield, Mass.). However, that was all the Lyons could muster in the game, as Coast Guard went on to score seven unanswered runs to end the contest.

McLintock went 2 for 2 in the game while Allicyn Cole also recorded two hits, going 2 for 3 at the plate.

Wheaton returns home next Saturday, April 17 with another doubleheader against NEWMAC opponent Babson starting at 12 p.m.
