Men's Soccer Defeated by No. 13 MIT, 3-1

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team was defeated by visiting No. 13 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-1, this afternoon in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest at Keefe Field on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 9-4-0 overall and 2-3-0 in league play, while the Engineers, who are ranked nationally by the United Soccer Coaches, win their sixth straight match to improve to 11-2-1 for the season and remain unbeaten in league play with a 4-0-1 mark.

Wheaton held a slight 11-9 shot margin and MIT held a 7-4 upper hand in corner kick opportunities.

The Engineers got on the board in the 34th minute to take a 1-0 edge when senior midfielder Peter Novoa (Omaha, Neb.) tallied his seventh goal of the season.

MIT looked primed to head into the intermission with a one-goal lead, but Wheaton had other ideas. First year forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) connected for his fourth tally of the season for the Lyons with an outside right shot with just 68 seconds remaining in the half. The squads headed to the break with a 1-1 tie before Faro put the Engineers ahead for good.

Senior midfielder Noah Faro (Rexford, N.Y.) lifted a cross in front of the goalmouth, where junior forward Will Seiple (Boulder, Colo.) re-directed it into the back of the net to break 1-1 tie and give the Engineers the lead in the 58th minute of play.

MIT received an insurance goal early in the 74th minute when it was the recipient of an own goal to take a 3-1 lead. Neither team scored for the remainder of the match, despite header shots from Lyons' junior forward Avery Santoro (North Chatham, Mass.) in the 82nd minute and senior defender Nick Vanini (Londonderry, N.H.) in the final 60 seconds of play. Both were denied by junior goalie Paarth Desai (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who finished with four stops on the day.

Senior goalie Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished the match with three saves for Wheaton.

The Lyons return to play on Wednesday, October 20 when it hosts Salem State University on Keefe Field at 3:30 p.m., while MIT travels to Worcester, Mass. to play Worcester State University on the same day at 7:00 p.m.
