Volleyball Defeats Clark; Fall to Connecticut College

GAME ONE: Wheaton 3 - Clark 2 (25-15, 25-16, 25-27, 19-25, 15-10)

RECORDS: Wheaton (10-6, 2-1 NEWMAC) – Clark (4-11, 1-2 NEWMAC)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College volleyball team returned to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday morning with a 3-2 (25-15, 25-16, 25-27, 19-25, 15-10) win over Clark University. 
  • Wheaton was led by a career-high 21 kills from junior Julia Palomba, who also finished with 11 digs, four aces and two blocks. Junior Casey Dinga contributed 12 kills and five blocks in the win, while Haley McCreight finished with seven kills. 
  • Becca Houghton ended the contest with 44 assists, while defensively, Sophie Wilhelm led the team with 19 digs. 
  • With the opening set tied at 7-7, Wheaton went on an 8-0 run and never looked back, allowing Clark just eight more points.
  • Wheaton started the second set with back-to-back aces from Adara Hamilton, securing the lead for the Lyons which they would never let go of. 
  • The third match was a back and forth battle that saw six score ties before Clark closed out the set on a Lyon error and a kill. 
  • Clark carried that momentum into the fourth set, collecting a quick 6-0 lead, en route to a 25-19 win. 
  • In the deciding set, Wheaton fell behind early but was able to rally back on five consecutive Clark errors, taking an 8-6 advantage. Despite Clark's attempts at a comeback, Wheaton kept the Cougars at a distance, securing the conference win.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Lyons returned to the court after the Clark contest, facing off against Connecticut College with the Camels defeating Wheaton 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18).
  • Palomba ended the match with a team-high 13 kills, while Emily Hickey and Houghton each finished with five. 
  • Hannah George finished with a team-high 17 assists, while Houghton dished out 10 passes.  
  • Errors proved to be the difference in the opening set with Connecticut College finishing with slightly less than Wheaton, allowing them to capture a 25-23 win. 
  • A kill by the Camels broke a 6-6 deadlock in the second set helping Connecticut College pick up another win. 
  • Conn. College opened the third set with an ace and never looked back taking the set and the match.
