Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College softball team picked up their first conference win of the season with their split against Wheaton in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Lyons took game one before an impressive pitching performance from senior Jessica Flohr (Foster City, Calif./Crystal Springs Upland School) secured the game two victory, 5-2. Smith moves to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton is 13-5 on the year and 1-1 in league play.
GAME 1: SMITH 3 WHEATON 6
- Wheaton scored once in the first as Lindsay Whittles doubled to right, scoring Katelyn Barton.
- An RBI single in the bottom of the third from Alyssa Pioggia (East Longmeadow/East Longmeadow) brought home Lucy Grant (Bethel, Conn./Notre Dame Catholic) for Smith's first run of the afternoon.
- The Pioneers scored another run in the third and added a run in the fourth to go ahead 3-1.
- Wheaton's Barton and Jade Assad each hit homers in the fifth to give the Lyons a 4-3 lead after five.
- Wheaton would add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to secure the 6-3 final.
- Shelbi Wilson (7-3) earned the win for Wheaton, as she scattered four hits, allowed two earned runs, and struck out five.
- Smith starter Katie Wingrove (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) (0-2) shouldered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
- Barton went 1-for-2 with three RBI for the visitors.
- Pioggia went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Pioneers.
GAME 2: SMITH 5 WHEATON 2
- Smith went up 1-0 in the first as Feeney doubled to center, scoring Wagner from second.
- A triple from Feeney down the right-field line brought Esquer and Grant home to five Smith a 3-0 lead. Konas' single to left allowed Feeney to cross home plate.
- Trailing 4-0 in the second, Wheaton added runs in the second and third to cut the lead in half.
- An RBI triple from Emma Kraus (Wakefield, Mass./Dupon-Kraus Homeschool) put Smith out in front 5-2 for the final.
- Flohr picked up her third win of the year as she pitched 6.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
- First-year Emma Gardecki (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) came in to pitch the final inning.
- Junior Makena Wagner (Hilo, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Hawaii) and senior Tyler Feeney(Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) each collected two hits for the Pioneers.
