Last Events Push Wellesley Past Women's Swimming & Diving

LOCATION: Wellesley, Mass. (Chandler Pool)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College women's swimming & diving team returned to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon falling to Wellesley, 144-143, in a come from behind victory for the Blue who swept the 200 IM relay to earn the victory.
  • Wheaton started strong, earning a win in the 200 medley relay, with Kathryn Cole, Elizabeth Bernardy, Lydia DaCorte, and Maggie Lawler finishing in 1:52.56, beating out Wellelsey's top team.
  • The Lyons swept the 1000 freestyle with Kayleigh Foley leading the way with a time of 11:26.08. Caroline Genther and Emma Flesher followed in 11:29.38 and 11:45.63 respectively.
  • Delia MacLaughlin battled Hannah May of Wellesley in the 200 free with the Blue sophomore pulling out a slim victory over the Wheaton first-year who touched in 1:58.67.
  • Wheaton took first and second in the 100 backstroke with Katherine Vitello finishing first in 1:01.84 and Cole finishing right behind in 1:01.86.
  • Bernardy earned Wheaton nine points in the 100 breaststroke with a first-place individual finish, touching in 1:09.57.
  • Wheaton picked up another first-place finish, this time with DaCorte earning a victory in the 200 butterfly (2:12.57). The wins kept coming for the Lyons with Lawler touching first in the 50 free (25.25) with Daley finishing in third (26.08).
  • Wheaton was edged out of a first-place finish in the 100 free and 200 backstroke with MacLaughlin finishing one-tenth of a second behind a Wellesley swimmer in the 100 free. Vitello finished just two-tenths of a second behind a swimmer from Wellesley in the 200 back, while Julia Centola finished third in the event. 
  • Wheaton kept up the pace, earning wins in the 200 breast (Erin Kean) and 500 free (DaCorte), while finishing second and third in the 100 fly (Karen Iizuka and MacLaughlin).
  • Wheaton held a slim lead heading into the final two events but the Blue swept the 200 IM to take the lead. The Lyons closed out the day with a win in the 400 free relay with MacLaughlin, Daley, Lawler, and DaCorte finishing in 3:39.30, but a second place finish by the Blue eanred them the come from behind victory.

UP NEXT: Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Bridgewater State for a 6 p.m. meet.
