Softball Sweeps Babson

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College softball team swept the Babson College Beavers in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) double-header Sunday afternoon at Clark Softball Field. The Lyons advance to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

GAME ONE: WHEATON 5 - BABSON 0

Senior pitcher Danielle Cimino (3-3) shut down Babson's offense as she held them to only four hits in her seven innings pitched.

Wheaton's bats went to work immediately in the first inning as senior Jessica Cochrane blasted a home run to left field to get the Lyons on the board first.

It was a big third inning that helped seal the victory for the Lyons as senior Mary DeMoura started action by drilling a single in right center. After a walk and fielder's choice, it was senior Caroline Fairbanks' single that brought in senior Rebecca Seifert to make it 2-0. But all the power would come from sophomore Emily Schlapak who crushed a three-run homer to left center to welcome home Fairbanks and Cochrane, tallying Wheaton's final runs.

Babson pitcher Ali Reilly (3-4) registered four strikeouts in her 5.2 innings pitched.

GAME TWO: WHEATON 6 - BABSON 4

Seifert was the first run on the board for Wheaton in the first inning, but the Beavers were quick to respond in the bottom half with two singles to the outfield that scored in Annie Quine and Leslie Moore to put Babson ahead 2-1.

That lead would be short lived as Fairbanks kicked off the third inning with a single to center field to bring in Seifert. Schlapak would blast her second home run of the day and sixth of the season to left field, bringing in Fairbanks to push Wheaton back ahead 4-2.

Babson would tack on a run in the fourth and sixth innings to tie it at four, but Wheaton would take advantage of a wild pitch and error to score in Seifert and Cochrane to give them the 6-4 lead as the Lyons would go on to shut the Beavers down in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory.

Junior pitcher Allison Cox (2-4) earned two strikeouts with five hits in her 6.1 innings pitched.
