Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Wheaton College baseball team fell 12-7 to Rutgers-Camden Friday morning in the RussMatt Invitational at Myrtle Lake.
After plating three runs in the first inning, Rutgers-Camden tacked on five more in the following three innings and never looked back.
Down 3-0 heading into the second inning, the Lyons posted three runs of their own. Zach Goodwin-Boyd got things started with an RBI single up the middle that brought in Casey Twomey. Ty Calabro followed the Goodwin-Boyd hit with an RBI single of his own that knocked in Tyler Walsh. Goodwin-Boyd came around to score later in the inning courtesy of a Josh LaJoie ground out.
The Lyons cut the deficit to two, after plating two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth. An error by the Scarlet Raptors allowed Justin Sellar and Jared Sharkey to come in to score in the fifth. Sellar led off the inning with a walk, which was followed by a single to right by Sharkey. LaJoie came around to score the Lyons only run in the sixth, after another RUC error.
Rutgers-Camden tacked on three runs in the seventh, before sending another guy home in the eighth, giving them a 12-6 lead. Wheaton earned one run back in the ninth with Goodwin-Boyd coming around to score again. The senior outfielder reached on a hard hit double to right center and came around to score with a single up the middle by Willy Boyd.
The Lyons return to the field on Saturday, March 18 for a double-header against St. Thomas (Minn.). The first game is set for 2:30 p.m
