Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team ended the 2016-2017 regular season on a winning note Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wellesley College Blue 58-55 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.
Junior Jill Bodreau had a record afternoon for the Lyons, netting a career-high 17 points, finishing 6-of-11 from the floor, which included hitting 5-of-10 from three-point range. Bodreau also finished with three rebounds, an assist and a steal. First-year Lexi L'Heureux-Carland and Rebecca Olivieri each ended the game with nine points. Ruthie Zientek collected a team-high seven rebounds, while Emily Cuthbertson and Sophia Black each pulled down six.
Caitlin Aguirre led all players with 18 points, while Zojajha Ayub and Ailis Hanley each scored 12 for the Blue. Hanley ended the contest with the games only double-double, collecting a game-high 12 boards to go with her 12 points.
Bodreau wasted no time getting her afternoon started, hitting the first of her five three-pointers to start the game, putting Wheaton on top early. The three-pointer set the tone in the first quarter, sparking a 10-3 run by Wheaton that saw baskets from Wind, L'Heureux-Carland, Olivieri and Chelsea Rairdon. Hanley broke the Blue's scoreless streak with just three seconds left in the opening quarter with a layup.
Wellesley was able to carry the momentum into the second quarter, opening the frame on a 9-0 run that handed them their largest and only lead of the game. Olivieri handed the lead back to Wheaton at the 6:24 mark with a three-pointer assisted by Zientek. The two sides kept the game close the rest of the way with Wheaton taking a 26-22 lead into halftime.
It took just 10 seconds for Wheaton to get things going in the third quarter with L'Heureux-Carland laying one in, kick starting a 10-2 run. L'Heureux-Carland capped off the run she started draining a free-throw with 6:23 on the clock. The free-throw handed Wheaton its largest lead of the contest at 36-24. Despite facing a 12 point deficit, the Blue continued to challenge the Lyons, pulling within four, 36-32, just over a minute later. Black pushed the Lyons advantage to nine, 44-35, in the final seconds of the third quarter with a free-throw.
Wellesley continued to chip away at the Wheaton lead in the fourth quarter, pulling within three-points, 55-52, in the final 30 seconds with a free-throw from Kendall You Mak. Free-throws from Cuthbertson and Zientek pushed the Lyon lead back to six with 14 seconds remaining. Aguirre made things interesting with seven seconds remaining, hitting a three-pointer that pulled the Blue within three points. Wheaton utilized the final seconds of the contest well, keeping the ball away from the Blue who were unable to stop the clock.
The Lyons, who faced several obstacles this season, end the year 5-20 overall and 3-13 in the NEWMAC.
