Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's basketball team traveled to Clark University for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest Saturday morning. The Cougars pulled out a 60-56 win over the Lyons.
Playing 31 minutes, Emily Cuthbertson led the Lyons with 12 points on a 4-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc. The junior also pulled down five rebounds, dished out two assists and picked up a steal and a block. Jill Bodreau and Ruthie Zientek each ended the game in double-figures, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Senior Sophia Black and first-year Sara McLeman led the team with six boards a piece, while Lexi L'Heureux-Carland and Abby Hamilton, along with Cuthbertson pulled down five.
Ezemma Ogechi led all players with 21 points and 17 boards. Sam O'Gara knocked down 15 points in the win.
After trailing 16-9 to start the first quarter, the Lyons held the Cougars scoreless for the next six minutes, managing to pull within a point on a jumper by Black to start second quarter scoring. Wheaton knotted the game at 20-all with 6:28 remaining until halftime on a three-pointer by Bodreau. A jumper by Zientek nearly three minutes later handed Wheaton a 22-20 advantage. Wheaton closed out the half on a 7-0 run, taking a 27-20 lead into the half.
Clark slowly chipped away at the Wheaton lead in the third quarter, going onto tie the game at 37-37 on a layup by Sam O'Gara. The Lyons recaptured the lead moments later on a Black layup with a little over three minutes to go in the quarter. Another O'Gara layup handed the Cougars the lead once again and this time it stuck. Despite tying the contest twice, the Lyons would never lead in the fourth and final quarter.
Wheaton returns to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Springfield for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
