Men's Soccer Falls to Roger Williams, 1-0

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. -  The Wheaton College men's soccer team fell, 1-0, against the Roger Williams University Hawks on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at Bayside Field.

The Lyons move to 5-3-1 overall on the season while the Hawks advance to 2-5-1.

Roger Williams tallied the first score of the game at the ten-minute mark for a quick 1-0 lead. The Hawks earned possession of the ball from about 30 yards out and chipped a pass over the defense and to Spencer Thibodeau. Thibodeau took the pass inside the right side of the box and crossed a shot into the left corner of the net.

Despite trailing, Wheaton managed to obtain a number of legit scoring chances that just sailed too far wide. Junior Amara Sesay and junior Louis Chavez each put up two shots in the period that had strong velocity but just hooked too far of the net.

Wheaton entered the second half still trailing by one despite holding an 11-5 advantage on shots.

Wheaton came very close to tying up the game in the 66th minute. Sesay chipped a pass to first-year Roni Diniz, just staying onside. He put a point-blank shot on goal from less than five yards out.

Five minutes later, Wheaton just missed another chance to knot the game on a shot by Sesay. Sophomore Adam Waks sent a shot pass backwards to Sesay, who put up a falling one-timer shot, but bounced off the right post.

Wheaton attempted to put forth more shots in the final minutes of the game from sophomore Curran Wait and Diniz, but fell just short. Wheaton held the 5-2 mark on corner kicks and 22-7 mark on shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper James Bailey (1-2-1) registered four saves.

The Lyons host the WPI Engineers on Saturday for their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup of the season with action kicking off at 1 p.m. at Keefe Field.
