CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Wheaton College softball team opened the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon where the No. 3 Lyons battled No. 6 Springfield College in game one, defeating the Pride 9-2. The win advanced Wheaton to game two on Friday against No. 2 MIT, where they fell 2-0.

The Lyons face potential elimination in game three on Saturday of the double elimination tournament where they take on No. 5 Wellesley College. Wheaton currently sits 23-13 overall on the season.

GAME ONE- Wheaton 9, Springfield 2

Wheaton opened action with a big first inning, scoring four runs to jump on the board. Emily Bouthillette started the scoring rampage for the Lyons when she knocked a single to deep center field to bring in Caroline Fairbanks and Emma Hart. Marissa Timoteo followed up with a single of her own, this time to the gap in center field that was able to score in Bouthillette and Kelly Welch.

In the bottom of the third, it was Bouthillette again who registered an RBI when she drilled a double to right field to get in Welch as Morgan Walsh continued Wheaton's strong momentum with a single straight up the middle to get the Lyons up 6-0.

Springfield put up their only runs in the top of the fourth when they utilized a single, fielder's choice and error to get two runs across.

Timoteo helped seal the victory for the Lyons with a single up the middle that gave the Lyons the 9-2 final.

Pitcher Danielle Cimino tallied her ninth win of the season, pitching six innings and striking out five.

GAME TWO- MIT 2, Wheaton 0

It was a quiet first four innings, as both teams held the opponents to limited base time. It wasn't until the fifth inning where MIT finally broke through to get on the board. The Engineers would dish out two singles that would each bring in a run, giving them the 2-0 advantage.

That would be all it took as Hart would start the top of the sixth with a well placed bunt for a single, but it wouldn't be enough as the Lyons couldn't tally any runs across the board.

Pitcher Allison Cox collected the loss in her six innings pitched for Wheaton to move to 10-3 overall.

Hart ended the game with two hits as Welch and Erin Deneen each recorded one.
