Softball Sweeps Double-Header at Rebel Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team collected their first two wins of the season on Sunday by sweeping a double-header at The Rebels Games hosted in Kissimmee, Fla. The Lyons started the day with a 7-4 victory over Skidmore College and conclued with a 7-3 win over the State University of New York at Cortland.

Wheaton advances to 2-2 overall with the wins.

Wheaton 7, Skidmore 4 (Game One)

Junior Caroline Fairbanks knocked her second home run in two days when she cranked one over center field in the seventh inning to further extend Wheaton's by three runs.

Fairbanks had kicked off the game with a sac fly in the first inning to score in senior Madeline Hatch as the Lyons jumped on the board first. Sophomore Alexis Havrilla singled up the middle to dish out her own RBI in the second, scoring in senior Erin Deneen. Wheaton went on to tally four runs in the second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

The Lyons clutched their first victory when they sealed three straight outs in the seventh innings to end the game.

Wheaton 7, SUNY Cortland 3 (Game Two)

Wheaton carried a tight battle against Cortland State for the majority of the game, both teams tallying runs on the board. It was the break through in the fifth inning that gave Wheaton the four-run lead that carried them through the seventh for the 7-3 win.

The Lyons got on the board in the first inning when Fairbanks push a single up the middle that scored in senior Emma Hart

Cortland responded with two runs at the top of the second to take the lead, but that wouldn't last long as Wheaton tied it back up in the bottom half off a run by Hart who scored on a passed ball.

Junior Emily Bouthillette started it in the fifth when she doubled to left field which brought in two runs. Junior Katelyn Andrade carried the momentum when she added her own single to the board in left field that brought in senior Marissa Timoteo

Three up, three down at the top of the seventh earned Wheaton's second win of the day as they defeated Cortland State.

The Lyons battle McDaniel College at 9 a.m. and Washington College at 1:30 p.m. in another double-header during day three of The Rebel Games hosted at Osceola County Softball Complex on Monday.
