Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Wheaton College baseball team fell to Rhodes College 10-5 on Saturday afternoon in game two of the RussMatt Invitational.
The Lyons fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Lynx improve to 11-9 overall.
Wheaton got things going early with a run in the bottom of the first with senior Jimmy Smith crossing the plate on a fielder's choice by Mike Beneduce. The Lyons kept them coming with another run in the next inning with an RBI double down the left field line by Justin Silvestro.
Three hits in the third inning handed Wheaton a 4-0 advantage. Matt Lavanchy knocked in the first run with a single through the right side that scored Zachary Goodwin-Boyd. With the bases loaded and one out, Smith flew out to left field allowing Tyler Walsh to score.
Rhodes sent three players across the plate in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to one. Trailing 4-3, the Lynx got their bats going in the fifth, scoring four more runs to take a 7-3 advantage.
Wheaton got a run back in the fifth with Lavanchy coming around to score after reaching on a lead-off double to right center.
The Lynx countered in the next inning with an RBI single from Zach Lange. Rhodes rounded out the scoring with two ore runs in the eighth to take the game 10-5.
Junior Michael Bruemmel started the game, pitching 4.2 innings and striking out one in his first loss of the season.
Goodwin-Boyd finished the game 3-of-4 from the plate, while Silvestro and Lavanchy each ended 2-of-5.
Wheaton returns to the field on Sunday, March 13 for a double-header against Rowan University. Game one is set to begin at 9 a.m.
