NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Wheaton College men's swimming and diving team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition on Friday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with the Bears earning a 163-125 victory.
Senior diver Ricky Davies notched second-place for the Lyons opening in the one-meter dive with a 250.65 final score. First-year Aaron Howe placed third behind him at 224.47. Davies and Howe also went on to register second and third place in the three-meter dive.
Senior Ross Johnston claimed a season-best time in the 200-yard freestyle when he clocked in a final time of 1:48.97 for second place while senior Frederick Garneau led the way for the Lyons in the 50-yard freestyle, timing in a 21.91 final for a season-best. Garneau later steered himself to another season-best when he earned 48.93 in the 100-yard freestyle for first-place.
Sophomore Jacob Cost maintained the strong momentum for Wheaton when he recorded his own season-best performance during the 200-yard backstroke with a final of 2:01.99. Johnston helped conclude the meet for the Lyons in the 200-yard individual medley when he dished out first-place at 2:01.46 for a season-best time.
Closing out in the 200-yard freestyle relay, senior Jerard Fredette, junior Raymond Bortolot, senior Todd Lambert and Garneau issued a first-place spot when they concluded the race with a 1:28.29 final.
The Lyons travel to Bridgewater State University on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
