Second Half Leads Men's Basketball to 73-70 Win at Regis

Box Score

WESTON, Mass. - A strong second half performance guided the Wheaton College men's basketball team to a 73-70 win at Regis (Mass.) Sunday evening on Higgins Court.

Wheaton (3-2) trailed 32-24 at the half, but found a way to overcome the deficit led by 10 second half points from first-year Alex DuBrow. DuBrow, who came off the bench, led the Lyons with 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the floor and hitting 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. Sophomore David Carbonello ended the game with 12 points, while Quinton Dale and Ryan Fogarty each chipped in 11. Dale also collected a team-high 11 rebounds, earning his fifth consecutive double-double of the season.

Jordon Seldon led Regis (2-3) with a game-high 18 points, while Julio Galay came off the bench to score 15 for the Pride. Ademola Afonja and Chris Leak Jr. each finished with double-doubles, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively, while Leak Jr. pulled down a game-high 12 boards and Afonja collected 10.

With the first half tied at 4-4 it took nearly four minutes for either team to put the ball in the basket with Galay ending the scoreless drought with 12:51 to go in the first. Wheaton took its final lead of the opening frame at the 6:30 mark after a steal by Carbonello setup a fast-break layup by Duaka Ekwensi.

A sloppy start to the second half saw both teams miss several chances. Back-to-back made free-throws by Carbonello with 17:40 on the clock got the comeback going for the Lyons. Three-pointers from Timothy Berry and Carbonello moments later knotted the game at 32-32.

Wheaton never trail again after sophomore Riley Tetreault drained a three-pointer with 7:50 to play. The Lyons extended their lead to as much as eight with just under five minutes to play, but had it erased by the Pride with 2:25 to go. With the contest tied at 60-all, Wheaton converted its free-throws down the stretch to pull out the one-possession victory.

Wheaton returns to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Framingham State for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
