Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College volleyball team earned a 3-0 victory over the Emerson College Lions in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Tuesday evening in Emerson Gymnasium.

The Lyons (9-11, 2-4 NEWMAC) came out strong, posting 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 final scores.

Sophomore Claire Cansler earned a team-high 12 kills while junior Allison Cox finished with nine and sophomore Cathryn MacGregor had eight. Junior Stephanie Martin led the defense with 14 digs with first-year Nikita Selivan tallying 12. Martin also had a solid game from the serve, earning a match-high five aces.

Bella Edwards led Emerson with 10 kills while also tallying two service aces. Moira Brennan registered 24 assists and Fara Cohen tallied 11 digs.

It was an even first set as both teams battled back and forth until Wheaton pulled ahead with a 18-13 lead and didn't hold back with services aces from Martin and MacGregor as well as kills from MacGregor, Cox and Selivan to seal the first victory.

During the second set, Emerson gained a 10-7 lead to put themselves ahead, but Wheaton would put up a hard fought battle to tie it 21-21 and carry on the momentum to comeback and win, 25-22.

The Lions began set three with five straight points to take a hefty lead before Wheaton could get on the board. A kill from Cox gave the Lyons their first point and kicked off a five-point streak of their own to tie it. First-year Sadie Stewart would give the Lyons their first lead of the set, notching a point off an attack error to make it, 9-8. Wheaton would maintain their lead and stretch it to 19-13 before defeating Emerson with a final kill from Cansler and registering the 25-20 victory to sweep the Lions.

Wheaton travels to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 11 for their next NEWMAC competition with match time set for 7 p.m.
