Box Score NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College volleyball team earned its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-16) defeat of Mount Holyoke in Emerson Gymnasium.
The Wheaton Lyons are now 6-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play, while the MHC Lyons fall to 5-6 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC.
Wheaton was led by a match-high nine kills from Taylor Matook and seven from Claire Cansler. The Lyons also had eight other players finish with at least one kill. Deirdre Wilson dished out 29 assists in the win, while Olivia Wilson came up with a team-high 11 digs. Kendall Jacobs led Wheaton with three blocks, while Cansler, Elise Waelder and Matook each finished with two.
Joy Maran and Jamesa Allen led the Mount Holyoke Lyons with four kills each, while Sarah Caggiano had three. Natalie Lyon finished the match with a team-high 13 assists and a match-high 14 digs. Allen led all players with five blocks, while both Caggiano and Maran finished with three.
Wheaton opened the first set on fire, jumping out to a 15-6 advantage on an attacking error by Mount Holyoke. Mount Holyoke earned a few points back over the next couple of plays with the help of two Wheaton attacking errors and a kill by Emma Sweeting. Leading 17-12 the host Lyons let their opponents score just three more down the stretch en route to a 25-15 win.
In the second set, the visiting Lyons were the aggressors, taking an 11-4 lead with kills from Meserve, Maran and several Wheaton errors. Wheaton settled down and captured its first lead of the set after going on a 12-4 run over the next several minutes. The home team picked up the win during a string of D. Wilson serves that started with an ace.
The final set started off far more competitive than the opening two, but it would be shortlived as Wheaton took a 5-4 lead on a Cathryn MacGregor kill. The home Lyons would not trail the rest of the way.
Wheaton returns to the court on Sept. 29 at Springfield for a 7 p.m. NEWMAC contest. Mount Holyoke also returns to action on Tuesday with a home contest against Wellesley at 7 p.m.
