Box Score NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College volleyball team fell 0-3 (18-25, 17-25, 27-29) to Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night in Emerson Gymnasium.
Wheaton falls to 5-9 on the season and 0-2 in the NEWMAC, while Wellesley improves to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Arieanne Creighton led the Lyons with a match-high 12 kills, while Kendall Jacobs and Deirdre Wilson each earned six. Wilson also finished with a match-high 22 assists. Stephanie Martin ended the night with a match-high 14 digs for Wheaton, while Wilson, Claire Cansler, Taylor Matook and Elise Waelder each finished with a block for the Lyons.
Brooke Fieldman and Yasmine Reece paced the way for the Blue with 11 kills each. Maddie Koh ended the night with 17 assists, while Michelle Li chipped in 13. Elise Griffin led all players with four blocks for Wellesley.
Wheaton started the first set with a 4-1 lead after putting together a solid offensive effort on a string of Jacobs serves. The Lyons pushed their lead to 16-12, before the Blue offense went on the attack. A Wheaton service error sparked a 12-2 run from Wellesley, earning them the set.
Wellesely took that momentum into the second set where they trailed Wheaton just once en route to the 25-17 win.
The third set was a different story with the two teams fighting for each and every point. The set saw the score tied 15 times with neither side holding more than a three point lead. Down the stretch the Blue found a way to close out the set in their favor with a kill by Griffin and an ace by Fieldman.
Wheaton returns to Emerson for its next match, hosting Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC action on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
