Men's Soccer Grabs First NEWMAC Win against Springfield

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team came out victorious in the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition of the season, defeating the Springfield College Pride, 1-0, on Saturday at Keefe Field. The Lyons extend their win streak to six.

Wheaton (6-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) started the game strong putting Springfield's defense to the test as Noah Kossoff took the first shot of the game that was blocked by a defender, but Kevin Gil was there to respond to the deflect as he shot in the goal on the left side, just four minutes in the game.

Springfield (5-1, 0-1 NEWMAC) took their turn offensively tallying a few shots, but came up empty as Wheaton goalkeeper James Bailey held off the Pride.

In the second half, it was head to head for both teams with momentum shifting as both teams tried to gain control on their offensive side. Kossoff, Amara Sesay, Steven Pinski and Michael Cronin offered shots for Wheaton to keep the pressure on the Pride's defense.

Bailey (4-0) tallied five saves to hold off Springfield for the 1-0 victory.

The Lyons host Roger Williams on Wednesday in a nonconference matchup slated to start at 4 p.m. at Keefe Field.
