Women's Basketball Remains Perfect at Home; Defeats USCGA 64-49

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team remains undefeated in Emerson Gymnasium after defeating the U.S. Coast Guard 64-49 on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. 

With the win the Lyons are now 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Bears slip to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC. 

Wheaton was led by 25 points from senior Rebecca Arnone, who finished 10-18 from the floor and 2-3 from the free-throw line. Senior Kiley Shoemaker, who was honored prior to the start of the contest for joining the 1,000+ club, also ended the contest in double-figures, netting 12 points. Sophomore Ruthie Zientek led the Lyons with 10 rebounds, while Oppie Morris ended the night with eight. 

Senior Torie Sutherland finished with the games only double-double, grabbing a career-high 20 rebounds to go with 13 points. Meghan Fornaro also finished with 13 points for the Bears, while Gill Gerton knocked down eight points. 

Wheaton opened the first quarter with a strong 7-2 run, eventually going on to lead by as many as six, 14-8, with 2:03 remaining. The Coast Guard rallied back in the second quarter with Fornaro capping off a 6-0 run with a layup at the 8:56 mark, tying the contest at 14-14. The Lyons responded with a run of their own, stringing together eight unanswered points, taking a 22-14 lead with 4:13 left in the half. The Bears ended the half with an 8-2 run, making it a 24-20 game at the intermission. 

The Lyons increased their lead to eight points, 35-27, with 3:44 remaining in the third quarter. The Bears had an answer, running off six straight points to make it a 35-33 contest with 1:24 on the clock. 

Wheaton turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter, using a 7-0 run to take a 44-43 lead with 8:46 to go. The Coast Guard pulled the game back within four over the next minute with back-to-back three pointers. Wheaton put the game away moments later with the help of a 9-3 run with 4:24 remaining, making it a 53-43 game. 

The Lyons return to action on Monday, Dec. 7 for their first ever meeting against New Jersey City for a 6 p.m. road contest.
