Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday night, traveling to Worcester State where the Lancers collected a 95-89 victory over the Lyons.
With the loss the Lyons move to 2-1 overall, while the Lancers improve to 1-1.
Quinton Dale ended the night with his second double-double of the season, this time netting 18 points and collecting 13 rebounds. Dale ended the night 7-11 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line.
Senior Billy Battaglia led Wheaton with a team-high 27 points on 9-25 shooting and a perfect 8-8 performance from the charity stripe. Ryan Fogarty finished the evening with 15 points, while Timothy Berry knocked down 10 points.
WSU's Bilal Shakir led all players with 32 points, while teammate Jamal Mustapha ended the night with 20 points and 12 boards. Both Manny Cabral and Paul Brooks finished in double-figures in scoring with Cabral netting 13 points and Brooks 12.
The game was a rally, as each team battled in both halves - eight ties and 12 lead changes throughout the entirety of the game.
Worcester State finished with a 49-40 advantage at the half before Wheaton came back to take the lead with just under 10 minutes to go in the second on buckets from Dale and Battaglia.
The Lancers took the lead back minutes later when Shakir caught fire and made a jump shot and three three-pointers to put the Lancers on top. It wasn't long after that Wheaton's Battaglia tied the score on jumper, but Worcester State's Brooks gave the Blue and Gold the power, and eventually concluded the game with the Lancers besting the Lyons.
The Lancers overall shot 45.7 percent from the field, while the Lyons went 44.9 percent. Despite the shot advantage from the field, Wheaton College outshot the Lancers from the free throw line 82.1 to 63.3 percent.
Wheaton returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. in Emerson Gymnasium against Regis College.
