Volleyball Falls at Babson 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Wheaton College volleyball team hit the road for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against #10 Babson on Tuesday night with the Beavers pulling out a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-13) victory in Staake Gymnasium.

Wheaton falls to 12-15 on the season and 3-6 in NEWMAC play, while Babson improves to 22-8 overall and 7-3 in league play.

Senior Deirdre Wilson led the Lyons with 22 assists and 10 digs. Taylor Matook finished with a team-high seven kills, while Arieanne Creighton had six.

Jenny Karnes led all players with nine kills and two blocks, while Lorraine Mackiewicz ended the night with seven kills.

The first set was a back and forth with both teams struggling for control of the set. Trailing 19-17, Elise Waelder helped the Lyons chip away at the deficit with back-to-back kills, while an ace by Anna Strock and two attacking errors by the Beavers made it a 22-20 contest. Babson bounced back though, closing out the match with five straight points.

Leading 12-10 in the second set, Babson scored 10 consecutive points to build a 22-10 advantage. Wheaton fought its way back in, but Babson still managed to pull out the seven point win. Babson grabbed the lead early on in the third set and never looked back.

The Lyons return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. in Emerson Gymnasium against Smith.
