Volleyball Wins Third Straight with 3-2 Win Over Coast Guard

NORTON, Mass. – Senior Kendall Jacobs had a match-high 15 kills for the Wheaton College volleyball team, as the Lyons eanred a thrilling 3-2 (25-22, 13-25, 28-26, 15-13) win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

With the win the Lyons improve to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in conference action, while also picking up their third straight win of the season. The Bears move to 13-6 on the season and 3-4 in the NEWMAC, having their five game winning streak snapped.

Arieanne Creighton ended the night with 12 kills for the Lyons and Deirdre Wilson chipped in 10. Wilson also ended the night with a match-high and season-high 48 assists. Stephanie Martin led the Lyons with 19 digs, while Olivia Wilson had 16 and Cathryn MacGregor 12. Creighton and Elise Waelder each finished with a team-high three blocks.

Susan West led the Bears with 12 kills, while Michelle McGill had a team-high 23 digs. Maggie Hine had a team-high 27 assists, while Madison Scott had a match-high seven blocks.

Wheaton ran off five straight points for a 16-11 lead in the opening game. Coast Guard would get as close as three on three occasions and closed to 24-22 before falling 25-22.

The Bears never trailed in the second game. Leading 8-6, Coast Guard scored four of the next five for a 12-7 lead and when leading 17-13 put the game away by scoring the final eight points behind the serving of sophomore Michelle Hernandez, who had a pair of aces in the run.

The Lyons had an early 10-6 lead in the third game before the Bears responded with four straight to pull even at ten. The Bears would use a 7-1 spurt to take their first lead of the game and open up a 19-15 advantage. Coast Guard led 20-16 before Wheaton scored three straight to pull to within 20-19. Coast Guard would build its lead back up before Wheaton fought off three straight game points to tie it at 24. The two sides would trade points to deadlock the game at 26 all, before a kill by Waelder and a bad set by Emily Gilland ended the match in Wheaton's favor 28-26.

With the fourth game tied 11-11, Wheaton appeared to take control using a 7-2 spurt to take and 18-13 lead. Coast Guard would however score nine of the next 11 points and led 22-20. The Lyons scored four of the next five, making it a 24-23 contest. The Bears responded however with two of the next three points to take the win.

Wheaton led 8-4 in the fifth game and maintained it leading 11-7 before three straight points pulled the Bears to within 11-10.  Coast Guard trailed by one the rest of the way until a service error gave Wheaton the 15-13 win.

The Lyons return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match-up at Emmanuel.
