Goal in Overtime Boosts MIT over Wheaton

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's soccer team went head to head against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers on Saturday and battled it out through overtime until the Engineers knocked in the game winning goal to make the final, 3-2, at Keefe Field.

In this New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup, the Engineers (9-1-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) were quick to get on the board in the first two minutes with a shot that went in on the left side of the net. The Lyons (8-6, 2-2 NEWMAC) responded though with a goal of their own later on in the first half when Kevin Gil found an opening to make it 1-1. This was his second goal of the season.

Amara Sesay, Noah Kossoff and Steven Pinski also tallied shots for Wheaton.

In the second half, Curran Wait held possession for Wheaton as he took a shot, but fell just right of the net. It was in the 55th minute when Sesay crossed a pass to Louis Chavez who nailed it in the left side of the net for a goal, giving the Lyons their first lead of the game. This was Sesay's third assist and Chavez's third goal of the season.

The Engineers have only given up three other goals this season and that was back on Sept. 16 against Roger Williams University in their only loss so far.

MIT wouldn't give in during this half as they put in the tying goal fifteen minutes later that would push the game into overtime.

At the start of overtime, MIT received a corner kick in the first thirty seconds that led to their scoring opportunity with one shot in the 90th minute that was saved, but another shot followed immediately after and was knocked in for the game winning goal.

Goalkeeper Matt Dickey (4-5) tallied eight saves.

Wheaton hosts Bridgewater State next on Wednesday with game time set for 7 p.m.
