Lyons unbeaten streak snapped at nine-straight games, tied for eighth all-time in program history

WALTHAM, Mass. – In a matchup of two undefeated nationally ranked teams, No. 4 Brandeis University claimed a 1-0 victory over No. 12 Wheaton College in men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Gordon Field.

Brandeis, who entered tonight's game ranked No. 2 among all NCAA Division III teams in goals against average at a 0.25 clip, extended its shutout streak to 585:47 with its sixth-straight clean sheet (seven total on the season). Judges' senior goalkeeper Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H./Concord) stopped his only test on net at the 89:30 mark on a shot by Wheaton junior forward/midfielder Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I./Wheeler School).

Senior forward/midfielder Michael Soboff (Framingham, Mass./Newton South) notched the game-winning goal for Brandeis in the 58th minute with a close range shot that beat Lyons' first-year goalkeeper David Sorkenn (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional). Sophomore forward Evan Jastremski (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) initiated Sobboff's sixth goal of the season – and fourth game-winner – by maneuvering past a defender near the right sideline before serving a pass to Soboff in the box who then turned towards goal and fired the strike home.

In his sixth start this season, Sorkenn made four saves in the loss for Wheaton to fall to 4-1-1 in his rookie campaign with the Blue and White.

Wheaton's pressure intensified after falling behind 1-0, but the visitors did not find the equalizer over the remaining 32-plus minutes of action despite compiling four corners and six shots. The Lyons' best chance came in the 65th minute as Amara Sesay (Bronx, N.Y./Martin Luther King) had a well-struck shot at the top of the box blocked by Brandeis senior Robbie Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth).

Brandeis held a 15-9 advantage in shots for the contest, while Wheaton fashioned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Additionally, the Lyons outshot the Judges 8-7 in the second half. Gil, Sesay and senior captain Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) all registered a team-leading two shots for the Blue and White.

Wheaton (9-1-1) hosts conference rival Babson College on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m. Brandeis (9-0-0) opens up its conference schedule on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Case Western Reserve.
