Box Score 3 D. Wilson named to All-Tournament Team
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team dropped all three of their matches on the afternoon as the Lyons hosted Western New England University (WNEU), Neumann and Westfield State in the Wheaton Invitational inside Emerson Gymnasium.
Wheaton All-Tournament Team selection Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) paced the Lyons with 39 kills (3.25 per set), 33 assists (2.75 per set), three service aces, 35 digs (2.92 per set) and seven block assists. Junior Casey Hess (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) compiled 23 kills (1.92 per set), while Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) had 19 kills and sophomore Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) and junior Sarah Alexander (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) both had 11 apiece.
Defensively, first-year Stephanie Martin (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) notched 40 digs (4.00 per set) and sophomore Olivia Wilson (Alameda, Calif./Head Royce) registered 23 digs (2.30 per set). Alexander also added nine block assists.
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 3, WHEATON 1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-22, 28-26)
Set one featured six tied scores and two lead changes before the Lyons edged out the Golden Bears for a 27-25 victory. Tied 25-25, Wheaton took advantage of an attack error to take a 26-25 lead and junior Robyn D'Agostino (Three Bridges, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) followed with one of her team-leading eight service aces on the afternoon to secure the set one victory.
WNEU rebounded in sets two and three before holding on for its 28-26 win in set four to take the match. The Golden Bears chipped away at the 20-20 tie during set four with five kills, including three from All-Tournament Team selection Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) down the stretch.
NEUMANN 3, WHEATON 1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18)
The Knights received double-digit kill efforts from Kelsey D'Imperio (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and Anna Waltz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh). D'Imperio led all student-athletes with 16 kills (.433 hitting percentage), while Waltz put home ten swings.
After the first two sets featured zero ties or lead changes, set three remained tightly contested throughout with five ties and three lead changes. Neumann took the lead for good after a service error gave the visitors a 20-19 margin. The Lyons followed with three-straight errors (one set, two attacking) before Waltz made it 24-19 with her final kill to eventually take set three. In set four, the Knights struck home a set-high 14 kills to wrap up the win.
WESTFIELD STATE 3, WHEATON 1 (25-16, 25-19, 26-24, 25-22)
Despite Hess, D. Wilson and Matook all tallying double-digit kills, the Lyons fell to the Owls after the match was tied 1-1 after two sets. Westfield rattled off a huge comeback after being down 14-7 early in set three using a 7-0 run, which included only included one kill and a service ace, to tie the score at 14-14.
Wheaton answered back with a 10-7 run of its own to reclaim a 24-21 advantage, but Westfield countered with a pair of kills from Victoria Sutphen (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) after a Lyons' ball handling error to seize momentum and take the match.
