Box Score Bakers throws one hitter in five inning game
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Wheaton College senior pitcher Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) allowed just one hit over five innings to guide the Lyons to a 10-0 victory over Catholic University on Friday evening. The Blue and White will return home from its spring break trip with a 9-1 record overall and a seven-game winning streak intact.
Baker gave up her only hit to the leadoff batter in the top of the fifth inning just missing out on throwing the 15th no-hitter in program history. Baker finished the contest with one walk and a game-high five strikeouts to push her record to 5-0 overall on the season.
Cardinals' freshman Sydney McGrath (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) was dealt the loss on 2 2/3 innings, five hits, four runs (all earned), one walk and a strikeout.
Wheaton opened up the scoring in the second as sophomore Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter) ripped an RBI double to left field and freshman Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass./Milford) followed with a run-producing single to left.
The Lyons tacked on two more runs in the third on a Timoteo two-run double down the right field line, before Wheaton's offense erupted for six runs in the fourth to force the eventual mercy rule. Junior Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) highlighted the frame with a two-run single to right.
In its 9-1 start so far this season, Wheaton's offense is averaging 6.8 runs per game, a .369 batting average, .423 on-base percentage and a .481 slugging percentage. The Lyons pitching staff has also hurled three shutouts and held opponents to a .258 batting average against.
Wheaton (9-1) takes on Bridgewater State University on Tuesday, March 18 in a non-conference doubleheader with game one scheduled for 3 p.m.
