Women's Volleyball Turns Away Smith, 3-1

Wilson compiles ninth triple-double this season (tenth career)

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team, ranked No. 12 in the latest NCAA New England regional rankings, wrapped up its 2014 regular season schedule with a 3-1 win over Smith College by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 23-25 and 25-21 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday evening at Ainsworth Gym.

With the win, the Lyons (18-13, 6-4 NEWMAC) have locked up the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Wellesley (16-10, 6-4 NEWMAC) next Tuesday inside Emerson Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Wheaton will be hosting its first playoff contest at Emerson Gymnasium since 1997 and its fourth place finish in the conference standings is its highest finish since 2003. Additionally, Wheaton's six conference wins this season are the most the Lyons have produced since 1998 (6-3).

Junior outside hitter/setter Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) compiled her ninth triple-double this season and tenth of her career with 15 kills (.565 hitting percentage), 18 assists and ten digs alongside two block assists and one service ace. Classmate Sarah Alexander (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) put home nine swings, while sophomore Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) and juniors Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) all chipped in with seven putaways apiece.

Sophomore setter Caitlin Hellebrand (Corona, Calif./Santiago) surpassed the 500-career assists plateau with 26 total and first-year Stephanie Martin (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) notched 22 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Olivia Wilson (Alameda, Calif./Head Royce) also added 16 digs.

Smith middle blocker Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif./Whittier Christian) paced the Pioneers' attack with 13 kills, while Jenna Rubin (Norfolk, Conn./Suffield Academy) and Allison Hardy (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) both tallied six kills each. Senior defensive specialist Samantha Danquilan (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) collected a match-high 23 digs and first-year Dayra Diaz Marquez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/New Mission) ran the offense with 19 assists, 19 digs and four kills.

Wheaton, who snapped a three-match losing streak versus Smith, hit .262 on the match as the Lyons registered 62 kills on 160 total attempts (20 errors). The Blue and White also had 54 assists, four service aces, 80 digs and three blocks (one solo) in the match.
