Box Score Wilson posts triple-double in loss
WALTHAM, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Brandeis University by scores of 16-25, 25-23, 15-23 and 17-25 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Auerbach Arena.
Wheaton sophomore outside hitter/setter Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) recorded double-digit numbers in kills (12), assists (18) and digs (11) leading the squad in all three categories in the loss.
Classmate Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) aided the offense with 11 kills on 23 swings for a .304 hitting percentage and one dig. Senior right-side hitter Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) chipped in with seven kills and two block assists, while sophomore setter Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) compiled 16 assists and two digs.
Brandeis senior outside hitter Si-Si Hensley (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) notched her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs to go alongside four service aces and two digs. Junior outside hitter Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) led all student-athletes with 17 kills on 35 attempts for a .229 hitting percentage.
Hensley and Hood combined for seven kills, two digs and one block in the Judges first set victory over the Lyons. After a kill by Wheaton sophomore Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) made the score 5-5, Brandeis went on a 15-7 run and never looked back. Brandeis registered its highest hitting percentage of any set on the night at .417 putting down 11 kills against just one attacking error on 24 attempts.
The Lyons capitalized on ten attacking errors by the Judges in set two to even the match at 1-1 despite a match-low .034 hitting percentage in the game. Creighton powered home a team-leading three kills in the set, while sophomore Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) and Tebbetts turned in two kills apiece. Defensively, Wheaton tallied 11 digs and five blocks in the set.
Brandeis responded in the third set with 15 kills (.355 hitting percentage) receiving seven from Hood and five more from Hensley. Junior Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) and Hensley also combined for ten of the team's 12 digs in the set to guide the Judges.
Wheaton's offense was on display in the fourth and final set with 13 kills, including five from Wilson, but Brandeis erased another 5-5 tie early on in the action this time with a 15-6 run to close out the match.
The Lyons (6-6) travel to WPI on Saturday, September 21 to play in a tri-match against the host Engineers and Westfield State University. Wheaton's first match versus WPI begins at noon. Brandeis (6-6) hosts Emmanuel and Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
