Lyons Split Matches On Day One Of Johnson & Wales Invitational

Creighton puts away 20 kills in two matches

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team went 1-1 overall in two matches on day one of the Johnson & Wales Invitational defeating Keene State College, 3-1, while falling to Amherst College, 3-0.

Sophomore outside hitter Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Brookline) recorded 20 kills between both matches, while classmate Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) compiled 13 kills, 24 assists, two service aces, 19 digs, and two block assists to pace the offense.

Defensively, sophomore libero Robyn D'Agostino (Three Bridges, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) tallied 32 digs - 16 in each match - and junior defensive specialist Megan Donahue (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) turned in 23 digs. Senior right-side hitter Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) and sophomore middle hitter Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) were also pivotal on the defensive end for the Lyons in their 3-1 victory over Keene State as the duo combined for 18 block assists in the match.

(21-25, 22-25, 15-25)

Wheaton challenged the Lord Jeffs in the first two sets, but eventually dropped its opening match of the Johnson & Wales Invitational in straight sets. Jacobs reached a career milestone in the match putting away her 200th kill. Sophomore Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) had four kills and one dig, while classmate Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) chipped in with 13 assists and four digs. Gustofson also dished out 13 assists and had eight digs against Keene State. Gustofson enters day two of the Johnson & Wales Invitational tomorrow with 588 career assists.

WHEATON 3, KEENE ST. 1
(25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19)

The Lyons avenged a 3-1 loss to the Owls from nearly a week ago on Saturday, September 7 with their win tonight. Sophomore middle hitter Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) just missed an impressive double-double with nine kills, two service aces, 17 digs, one block solo and four block assists. Creighton had ten kills and three blocks (one solo), while Wilson contributed eight kills, 14 assists, two service aces, 12 digs and one block assist.

Tebbetts registered 11 blocks (one solo) and Jacobs added to her kills total with five on the night in addition to one service ace, six digs and eight block assists. Sophomore right-side hitter Casey Hess (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) added two kills, one assist, one dig and three block assists.

Wheaton (5-4) takes on Middlebury at noon and Mount Ida at 2 p.m. tomorrow on day two of the Johnson & Wales Invitational.
