Box Score NEWTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team defeated Mount Ida College in three straight sets, 3-0, by scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 26-24 in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
Sophomore outside hitter/setter Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) led the offense with nine kills on 13 swings (.462 hitting percentage) 10 assists, seven digs, four serving aces and two blocks.
Sophomore middle hitter Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) finished with 12 digs, six kills on 12 swings and two blocks, while sophomore setter Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) tallied a team-high 11 assists.
As a team, the Lyons hit .115 (30 kills, 20 errors, 87 attempts), registered 41 digs, 28 assists and 12 serving aces.
In the first set, the Lyons and Mustangs traded points prior to a 4-0 run at the end of the set, which featured back-to-back kills by Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich).
The Lyons used a 10-3 run to begin the second set with kills from Waelder, Wilson and sophomore outside hitter Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis-Brookline). The Mustangs trimmed the deficit, but a late session kill by senior right side hitter Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) finished the set.
Mount Ida maintained the lead for most of the final set, but a block by freshman right side hitter/outside hitter Gabby Gryko (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo), along with back-to-back kills by Tebbetts and Waelder helped Wheaton close out the session and secure their third straight sets victory of the season.
Wheaton (4-3) returns to the court on Friday, September 13 when it travels to Johnson & Wales University for the Johnson & Wales Invitational. The Lyons will face Amherst College in their first match at 6 p.m. followed by Keene State at 8 p.m.
Mount Ida (2-6) will travel to the same invitational and will face Keene State at 4 p.m. and University of New England at 8 p.m.
