Freshman sets new mark in 500-free
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wheaton College freshman Frederick Garneau (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) broke the school record in the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:47.72 to highlight the Lyons' efforts on day one of the MIT Invitational.
Garneau, who surpassed Sam Dean-Lee's '11 mark of 4:48.02 set on February 27, 2009, also helped Wheaton to a pair of top-10 finishes in the 200-freestyle and 400-medley relays.
Sophomore Daniel Spencer (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely), junior Nick Fredette (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham), senior Emerson Jenkins (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill School) and Garneau teamed up for a fifth place finish in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:26.53. In the 400-medley relay, Garneau, E. Jenkins and freshmen Ross Johnston (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Todd Lambert (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) combined for a time of 3:39.45 to place eighth overall.
In the 50-free, E. Jenkins ranked tenth overall with a time of 21.77-seconds, while Spencer finished 17th overall in 22.18-seconds.
Johnston and Fredette also posted top-15 placements in the 200-IM as Johnston ranked 12th (1:59.10) and Fredette was 14th (1:59.87).
Junior Richard Jenkins (Bow, N.H./Bow) checked in at 22nd overall in the 500-free with a time of 4:57.63.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow at the MIT Invitational with session two beginning at 10 a.m.
