MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Wheaton College (Mass.) men's swimmer Marcus Tran (Milton, Mass.) was named the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for the week of January 19-25, it was announced today by the NEWMAC.
Tran becomes the first Wheaton first year to earn Men's Swimmer of the Week since senior teammate Gavin Cullinan (Cumming, Ga.) was tabbed for the week of October 24-30, 2022 and just the third rookie since 2014.
The Milton High School product was brilliant, contributing to four wins for the Lyons in a dual meet against visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute on January 21. Tran dominated the 100-yard backstroke, winning the event by over a second and a half with a mark of 53.34, before taking the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.32. The Biology major set the tone swimming the fastest opening backstroke of any swimmer in the 400-yard medley relay, leading to a Wheaton winning effort of 3:29.78. The Lyons looked to Tran again to set the pace in the 200-yard freestyle relay and he didn't disappoint, giving Wheaton more than a second and a half lead in the opening 50 yards as part of a quartet that produced a winning clip of 1:24.81.
Tran has been outstanding in his first year for the Lyons, racking up 642.40 points to rank second on the team. He's shown tremendous versatility winning races in the backstroke, freestyle and butterfly during his initial campaign. The former Shamrock Swim Club standout has compiled 10 first place finishes and touched the wall among the top three in an individual race on 15 occasions this season, while posting six personal record times. Tran owns the fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle (20.66), the 100-yard freestyle (46.00) and the 50-yard backstroke (23.16) for Wheaton in 2025-26.
