Box Score

NORTON, Mass.- Wheaton College women's volleyball freshman Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) recorded 16 kills and 14 digs on Tuesday night, leading the Lyons to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24) victory over visiting Rhode Island College in Emerson Gymnasium.

With the win, Wheaton improves to 2-2 on the young season, while the Anchorwomen fall to 0-4.

Freshman Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) turned in 11 kills for the hosts, and classmate Robyn D'Agostino (Three Bridges, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) added nine digs and a match-high-tying four service aces.

Freshman Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) handed out 25 assist with six digs, while first-year player Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) added 14 assists, six digs and four aces.

For the visitors, senior Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I./La Salle) and freshman Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, R.I./Mount Saint Charles) each neared double-doubles.  Boyer recorded 16 kills and nine digs, while Palazzini contributed 12 kills and nine digs.  Senior Jessica Ho (Providence, R.I./Classical) added 36 assists and six digs.

The opening set proved to be tight, as the margin was no greater than three points until Wheaton broke a 21-all tie with the contest's final four points.  The Anchorwomen never held the lead but did manage to knot the score eight times.  A pair of kills by senior Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) gave the Lyons the lead for good at 23-21.

Rhode Island College also never led in the second set, as Wheaton jumped out to a 10-5 edge.  After the visitors brought the score to 10-7, the Lyons went on a 14-7 run to lead comfortably at 24-14.  The Anchorwomen narrowed their deficit to five before a Waelder kill gave the host a 2-0 advantage.

An 11-all tie ensued in set three, but Rhode Island College went on a 7-0 run and didn't look back.  Six points came off of Ho's serve.  A Gustofson ace made the score 20-17 before the Anchorwomen closed things out with a 5-2 stretch.

Rhode Island College gained a 5-0 advantage in the final set, but Wheaton chipped away and eventually led 11-10 thanks to a D'Agostino ace.  Six ties brought the score to 24-all before kills by Matook and Wilson ended the match.

The Lyons hit the road for the first time this weekend, when they head to Providence, R.I., for the Johnson & Wales University Invitational.  Wheaton's first match is at 6:00 p.m. on Friday against nationally-ranked and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) power Springfield College.
