Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I.- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team split its tri-match with Lesley University and host Salve Regina University during Saturday's pair of non-conference matches at the Rodgers Recreation Center.
The Lyons dropped a 3-1 (19-25, 25-8, 16-25, 11-25) decision to the host Seahawks before sweeping Lesley, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18). Improving to 5-9, Wheaton has already surpassed last year's win total.
Against Salve, Wheaton put forward a balanced hitting attack, led by freshman Anastasia Tammen's (San Pedro, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) 10 kills. Classmate Casey Hess (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) contributed eight kills, while freshmen Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) and Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) had seven each.
First-year player Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) handed out 25 assists, and classmate Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) added 16 helpers and six digs.
Seniors Christina Cannon (Milford, N.H./Milford) and Frances Trimble (Rapid City, S.D./Northfield Mount Hermon School) led the defense with 15 and 10 digs, respectively. Waelder added eight digs and three blocks.
In Wheaton's win over Lesley, freshman Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) registered a team-best six kills, Creighton and Tammen contributed five kills apiece, while senior Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) and sophomore Leigh Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) accounted for four each.
Gustofson and Kochiss dished out 13 and eight assists, respectively, with Kochiss delivering a match-high six service aces.
Senior Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) recorded 10 digs and Waelder added five.
The Lyons stay on the road Tuesday when they take on Smith College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match at 7:00 p.m.
