Four different Lyons tally goals in season-opening win over Salem State

Box Score

NORTON, Mass.- Playing Salem State University for the first time since 1995 during Friday afternoon's opener for both teams, the Wheaton College men's soccer team saw four different players tally a goal en route to a 4-0 victory in non-league action at Keefe Field.

Wheaton, which scored two goals in each half, ran its unbeaten streak in home openers to 22 dating back to 1991.

The Lyons posted the game-winning goal off a restart in the sixth minute, when senior Max Swanson (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) drove his right-footed boot into the lower left corner of the net.  Freshman Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I./Wheeler School) recorded the first of his two assists on the play.

Also scoring in the opening half was first-year Kai Gooden (London, England/Berkshire School), who finished off a cross from senior Federico Kelly (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) with 13:06 showing on the clock.

Just 3:40 into the second half, Wheaton extended its lead to 3-0, this time on a sophomore Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) corner kick.  Finkelstein's left-footed strike from the right corner of the field found classmate Marlon Ramalho (Framingham, Mass./Bridgton Academy), who headed the ball into the middle netting.

The Blue and White's fourth goal was also off a header, as freshman Michael Cronin (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) converted a Gil cross midway through the second half.

Wheaton sophomore goalie Devin Delfino (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) earned the win in just over 28 minutes of the opening half, while first-year keeper Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) made three saves in relief.

Salem State senior goalie Scott Hall (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) accounted for seven saves in the loss.  Wheaton held a 17-11 edge in shots, while the Vikings took four of the game's seven corner kicks.

The Lyons return to action tomorrow with a home contest against non-league foe Wentworth Institute of Technology at 3:00 p.m.
