Lyons pound out 31 hits, score 30 runs in DH sweep of Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Junior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) went 6-for-9 with a two-run home run and six RBI to help the Wheaton College softball team sweep its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader with Smith College on Sunday. The Lyons won game one 16-1 and game two 14-3.

Wheaton (11-11, 5-1 NEWMAC) scored two in the first, one in the fourth, four in the fifth, and nine in the seventh in the opener. Roy went 3-for-5 with four RBI, sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) and freshman Aimee Avila (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) each drove in two and scored three runs, and senior Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) hit her first collegiate home run.

Freshman Noelle Christmas (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) scattered four hits in five innings of work to earn the win. She allowed one run, walked two, and struck out one. Sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) worked a pair of scoreless innings to close the game.

Sophomore Kayla Kiers (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick) took the loss for the Pioneers (2-12, 0-4 NEWMAC) as she allowed six hits and seven runs (three earned) in five innings. She walked three and fanned three.

In the nightcap, the Lyons tied a program record with 41 at bats and scored 10 runs in the final two innings to put the game out of reach. Wheaton also recorded six doubles and three home runs, both of which are the tied for the second-highest single game totals in program history.

Tratner went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, Roy had three hits, three runs, and two RBI, junior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) drove in two and scored twice, and freshman Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin School) laced a two-run double in the seventh. Roy and Monahan each launched two-run home runs while sophomore Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton School) hit a solo home run in the fifth.

Baker picked up the win for Wheaton to improve to 7-9 on the season. She surrendered six hits and two runs while striking out five. Christmas worked the seventh and allowed one run on one hit. Kiers also took the loss in game two as she allowed 17 hits and 14 runs (12 earned) with six walks and seven strikeouts.

The Lyons travel to Beverly, Mass. for a non-conference doubleheader at Endicott on Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pioneers play a pair against Amherst tomorrow in Northampton.
