Lyons split doubleheader at Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Wheaton College softball team split  its non-conference doubleheader with Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon, winning game one 2-1 before dropping game two 3-0. The Lyons move to 5-7 with the split while the Bears go to 11-3.

Wheaton opened the scoring in the third when junior Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) led off with a triple to right center and scored on a sac fly by sophomore Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional). The Bears evened the score at one in the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Jasmyn McCone (Taunton, Mass./Taunton).

The game remained even until the sixth when the Lyons manufactured the game-winning run. Junior Alanna Monahan (Dorchester, Mass./Southfield School) led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by classmate Renee Laflam (Concord, N.H./Concord). The pair moved up 60 feet each on a sac bunt by junior Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./ Dighton-Rehoboth Regional), and sophomore Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) plated Monahan with a single up the middle to give Wheaton a 2-1 edge.

The Bears put two runners on with one out in their half of the seventh before sophomore Allison Baker (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) retired the next two hitters to improve to 4-5 on the season. She allowing six hits and one run while striking out eight. Junior Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and two runs with three walks and a pair of strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

In the nightcap, Bridgewater scored single runs in the second, fourth and six innings while holding the Lyons to just two hits. Senior Penny King (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) provided the only offense the Bears needed when she launched her first home run of the season over the left field fence in the second. Junior Melissa Harmon (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) delivered a sac fly for BSU in the fourth and homered in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Amber White (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) tossed seven shutout innings of two-hit ball to improve to 6-1. She walked three and struck out seven. Baker took the loss for Wheaton, allowing six hits and two runs in four innings of work.

The Lyons return to action on Thursday when they open the home portion of their schedule against Lesley at 3 p.m. The Bears host UMass Boston next Tuesday at 3 p.m.
