Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.- Wheaton College women's volleyball freshman Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) turned in 15 kills and 17 digs to lead the Lyons to a 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 26-24, 25-16) win over host Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday night in Howard Gymnasium.
Wheaton is now 7-15 on the season and 2-4 in league play, while the hosts fell to 3-12 and remain winless in the NEWMAC at 0-6.
Freshman Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) contributed eight kills for the Lyons, classmates Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) and Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) finished with 27 and 16 assists, respectively, while senior Frances Trimble (Rapid City, S.D./Northfield Mount Hermon School) recorded 11 digs.
For Mount Holyoke, freshman Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) notched 17 kills, sophomore Stephany Yang (Glen Allen, Va./Henrico) handed out 28 assists, and classmate Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) had 19 digs.
With the match tied at one, the home team started with the lead to open the third set, and the contest was nip-and-tuck as neither squad led by more than two points the rest of the way. With Wheaton trailing 23-21, back-to-back kills from Wilson knotted the score as the Lyons went on to win by two points.
In the final set, Creighton gave the visitors a 3-1 lead, and Wheaton eventually grabbed a 6-2 advantage behind a Kochiss kill. Mount Holyoke narrowed its deficit to 7-6, but Wilson's kill put the Lyons in front by a 10-7 count. Wheaton eventually went ahead 16-9 and led 22-14 en route to the victory.
The Lyons host Mount Ida College on Thursday in a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m.
