Box Score NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (14-25, 13-25, 17-25) decision to regionally-ranked Brandeis University in a non-conference match Thursday night in Emerson Gymnasium.
Wheaton falls to 6-15 overall, while the Judges, who are ranked 12th in the region by the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) poll, snapped its three-match losing skid to improve to 12-7.
Freshman Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) recorded seven kills and six digs to lead the Lyons. Classmates Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) finished with five kills each.
First-year setters Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) and Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) compiled nine assists apiece, with Kochiss adding six digs.
For the visitors, sophomore Liz Hood (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy) led the hitting attack with 12 kills, while junior Si-Si Hensley (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) turned in seven kills and seven digs.
Junior Yael Einhorn (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) supplied 25 assists and 11 digs, and sophomore Elsie Bernaiche (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) had 10 digs.
In the opening set, Brandeis jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. A Jacobs kill brought the Lyons within 11-7 before the Judges used an 10-3 spurt to lead 21-10. Wheaton got no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
The second set started nip-and-tuck, as Wheaton trailed 14-11, but the guests rattled off five straight points to lead 19-11 before posting the 12-point win.
Ten ties ensued during the third and final set, with the latter coming at 17-all, but the Lyons didn't score again as Brandeis went on an 8-0 run to close things out.
Wheaton takes the weekend off from competition and will travel to Mount Holyoke College next Tuesday night in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match at 7:00 p.m.
