Lyons hang tough against ninth-ranked Brandeis during 1-0 loss

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass.- The Wheaton College men's soccer team held nationally-ranked Brandeis University off the scoreboard for over 71 minutes in non-conference action Wednesday night before the Judges broke through in handing the Lyons a 1-0 loss on Gordon Field.

Wheaton, which has suffered four one-goal losses on the road, falls to 6-4-1, while Brandeis, which is ranked ninth in the country and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), remained unbeaten at 10-0-1.

In the opening half, the Judges held a 9-3 edge in shots while taking each of the frame's seven corner kicks, but freshman goalie Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) made four stops to keep the game scoreless.

Wheaton had a good offensive chance in the 60th minute, when Lyon freshman Kai Gooden (London, England/Berkshire School) was denied by senior Blake Minchoff (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional).  Sophomore Travis Blair's (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) gathered the rebound and his ensuing shot went wide.

The hosts went back on the offensive and forced Dickey to make a huge save in the 61st minute.  Brandeis' follow-up shot sailed over the target.  The teams traded the next four shots, with Dickey turning aside two shots and Minchoff one before the Judges broke the deadlock.

The Lyons had one final attempt as time ran out when they earned a free kick deep in the offensive zone, but senior David Turina's (North Yarmouth, Maine/Northfield Mount Hermon School) free kick from 20 yards out carried wide of the post.

Dickey was credited with nine saves in the loss, while Minchoff made two second-half stops during the shutout.

Brandeis held advantages of 21-11 in shots and 12-2 in corner kicks.

Wheaton returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at the United States Coast Guard Academy at 11:00 a.m.
