Wheaton battles regionally-ranked MIT before falling in four

Box Score

NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 16-25, 23-25) setback to regionally-ranked New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Tuesday night in Emerson Gymnasium.

The Lyons fell to 6-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Engineers, who entered tonight ranked 12th regionally in the most recent New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) poll, are now 19-3 and 4-1.

Freshman Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) led Wheaton's hitters with 13 kills, while classmates Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) had eight kills each.  Jacobs also added six blocks, and Waelder had five.

First-year setters Jackie Kochiss (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) and Page Gustofson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./South Tahoe) turned in 14 and 13 assists, respectively.

Freshman Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) had 10 digs, while senior Frances Trimble (Rapid City, S.D./Northfield Mount Hermon School) contributed nine.

MIT had a balanced hitting attack, led by freshman Trinity Leonard's (Mill Valley, Calif./Saint Ignatius) 10 kills.  Juniors Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) each had nine kills, while freshman Ada Taylor (Durham, N.C./NC School of Science and Mathematics) finished with eight.

Senior Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) distributed 46 assists, and classmate Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich./Morley Stanwood) had 17 digs.

Wheaton hung around in the opening set before falling by five and then carried that momentum into the second set, where the Lyons evened the match at one.  Thirteen ties ensued during the second set, including the final knot at 23-all before a Jacobs kill and block assists from Creighton and Waelder provided the hosts with the win.

The visitors jumped out to a 13-5 advantage in the third set.  Wheaton got as close as 17-12, but the Engineers answered with three straight points and didn't look back.  Trailing 24-21 in the fourth set, a kill and service ace brought the Lyons to within one, but Leonard's ensuing kill secured the win for MIT.

The Lyons remain at home on Thursday to take on regionally-ranked Brandeis University at 7:00 p.m.  The Judges are ranked 12th in New England.
