Lyons drop 6-2 decision at Rhode Island College, nightcap canceled

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Wheaton College softball team dropped a 6-2 decision at non-conference foe Rhode Island College on Thursday afternoon before the second game was canceled due to inclement weather at the Bazar Complex.

The Lyons fell to 11-10 with the loss, while the Anchorwomen won for the ninth straight time to improve to 9-3.

Senior Marissa Hobocan (Shelton, Conn./Saint Joseph) went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead Wheaton, classmate Katy Salka (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) was 2-for-4, sophomore Megan Roy (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) plated two runs, while freshman Ashley Brillon (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) drew two walks.  Junior Lesley Warn (Portland, Maine/Deering) yielded five earned runs with two strikeouts and seven walks in the loss.

For the hosts, senior Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) batted 3-for-3, classmate Laura DeNoncour (Johnston, R.I./Johnston) smacked a three-run homer, sophomore Emily Johnson (West Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) earned the pitching win, while senior Amanda Berard (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) picked up the save.

The teams exchanged zeros on the scoreboard until DeNoncour's three-run blast broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth.  Wheaton quickly got two runs back in the fifth, as Roy delivered the big blow with a two-out, two-run double to left center.

A sacrifice fly in the home half of the fifth made the score 4-2 before Rhode Island College tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth.  After seeing two swinging strikeouts to begin the seventh, Hobocan hoped to spark a two-out rally with a single down the left field line but instead was erased at second following a groundout to short that ended the game.

Wheaton is scheduled to return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action tomorrow afternoon at Babson College at 3:00 p.m.
