Rose becomes Wheaton's all-time assists leader, named all-tournament

PROVIDENCE, RI- Despite the Wheaton College women's volleyball team going 1-3 at the two-day Johnson & Wales University Invitational o.v.er the weekend, senior Becca Rose (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) became the program's all-time assists leader during Saturday's victory over Bridgewater State College before being named to the all-tournament team at the Harborside Recreational Center. 

Evening their record at 4-4, the Lyons began the tournament with a pair of Friday losses to the hosts, 3-1 (19-25, 15-25, 25-19, 20-25) and Connecticut College, 3-0 (20-25, 13-25, 16-25) before defeating Bridgewater State, 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 13-25, 25-22) and falling to Keene State College, 3-1 (12-25, 16-25, 25-23, 19-25) today.

Needing seven assists to tie and eight to move into the all-time lead beginning the day, Rose handed out eight helpers during Wheaton's 25-19 victory in the opening set against the Bears.  Moving past former leader Lynn Mulkeen '98, Rose now has 3,405 assists.

In Friday's opener against Johnson & Wales, freshman Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) paced the offense with seven kills.  Rose added six kills, 22 assists and 10 digs, junior Emily Davisson (Carpinteria, Calif./Laguna Blanca School) recorded 14 digs, and senior Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) had 10.

Versus Connecticut College, sophomore Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) finished with eight kills and seven digs.  Rose turned in a double-double of 19 assists and 13 digs, while Davisson and Hunt added 10 digs each.

During this morning's win over Bridgewater State, Jones totaled 11 kills, while freshman Lindsay Tebbetts (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) and Vergara had six and five, respectively.  Rose had another double-double of 28 assists and 13 digs, Davisson notched a team-best 15 digs, and Hunt added 13 digs.

In Wheaton's final match of the weekend, the Lyons posted a balanced hitting attack, led by Jones' eight kills.  Tebbetts and Vergara contributed seven kills each, while Rose had six to go alongside her 23 assists and 12 digs.  Davisson paced the defense with 22 digs, and Hunt alongside sophomore Olanna Nissim (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) added eight apiece.

Wheaton opens its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule on Tuesday at the United States Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m.
