NEW LONDON, CT- The sixth-seeded Wheaton College softball team's
season came to a close on Saturday, as the Lyons narrowly fell to
regionally-ranked Wellesley College, the fourth seed, 3-2 during a
New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
Tournament loser's bracket game at the United States Coast Guard
Academy.
Wheaton completed its spring at 20-18, while Wellesley advanced
to play in a 4:00 p.m. semifinal contest. Now 27-8, the Blue is
ranked sixth by the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches
Association (NEISCA).
Sophomore Amanda Poplaski
(North Reading, MA/North Reading) finished 2-for-3 for the
Lyons, who totaled three hits, while senior Andrea Bagley
(Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) yielded two earned runs on six hits
during a complete-game effort in her final contest in a Wheaton
uniform. She struck out two and walked three.
Senior Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL/The Bolles
School) notched the win for Wellesley while hitting a
tie-breaking home run in the sixth inning. Wood did not allow an
earned run in addition to fanning four and walking two. Freshman
Samantha Spiga (Perth Amboy, NJ/The Lawrenceville
School) finished 3-for-3.
Poplaski came around with the initial run in the top of the
first on a two-out miscue, but the Blue knotted the game on a
Wheaton error in the second. Wellesley plated an unearned run in
the third for a 2-1 edge, but Lyon junior Marissa
Hobocan's (Shelton, CT/Saint Joseph) infield single
with one down in the fifth brought home classmate Katy Salka (Ayer,
MA/Ayer).
However, Wood led off the sixth with a solo blast, and the Lyons
stranded the tying run on second base in the visiting half of the
seventh inning.
