AUBURNDALE, FL- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College baseball
team fell behind for the fourth straight game on Wednesday before
succumbing to Rowan University, 4-2 during their Florida trip at
the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
Ranked 17th nationally by D3baseball.com, the Lyons dropped
their second straight game in falling to 2-2. The Profs
raised their overall record to 7-4.
Freshman Frank Holbrook (Middletown, RI/Portsmouth Abbey
School) allowed four runs, three earned, on 11 hits with
two strikeouts and one walk in 5.2 innings during his college
debut, while junior Derek Pelkey (South Hadley, MA/South
Hadley) and freshman Jordan Wylie (Plymouth,
MA/Avon Old Farms School) combined to toss 2.1 frames of
scoreless relief.
Offensively, Wheaton managed just six hits, with junior
Eric Laliberte (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin) going
2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Classmate Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) drove in
two runs, scored another and added a home run. Sophomore
Dan Haugh (Andover, MA/Saint John's Prep) recorded
a double and drew a base on balls.
Wheaton surrendered two runs in the third before Haugh broke up
Rowan's pitcher's no-hit bid with two down in the top of the fourth
with a two-bagger down the left field line. After the Profs
stretched their advantage to 3-0 in the home half, the Lyons dented
the scoring column in the sixth when senior Paul Malaguti
(Andover, MA/Andover) scampered home to trim the deficit
to two.
Rowan pushed its lead back to three with a run in the bottom of
the sixth before Munley's eighth-inning solo blast over the right
center field fence made the score 4-2. With one out in the
ninth, senior pinch hitter Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro,
MA/Xaverian Brothers) singled through the left side and
Laliberte walked, but a strikeout and grounder thwarted the
rally.
The Lyons head to Winter Haven tomorrow morning to play
in-region opponent Curry College at 9:30 a.m.
